What Is Xtra-Guard 1?
With computers efficiently monitoring and controlling multi-million dollar production lines, Alpha Wire wants to make sure your lines never get shut down due to poor cable manufacturing. Alpha Xtra-Guard cables have been engineered to outlast any other cable in any electronic application. Alpha Xtra-Guard 1 electronic cables are for general purpose internal or external wiring of equipment.
Xtra-Guard 1 is most commonly used in high-technology applications like controlled environments, medical electronics, point-of-sale equipment, computer peripherals and industrial process controls. It comes in 300-volt, 600-volt, shielded, unshielded, multiconductor and multipair options in 24-14 American Wire Gauge (AWG). There is also an option for an Alpha Wire Supra-Shield®, which is an aluminum foil shield with a braided shield over it for ultimate protection.
The Benefits of Xtra-Guard 1
Xtra-Guard 1 offers a range of benefits:
- Strong and flexible insulation and jacketing: The premium semi-rigid or standard polyvinyl chloride (PVC) insulation and jacket offer good resistance to abrasion, oil, water and chemicals, as well as very good resistance to ultraviolet rays. Oil resistance complies to UL Oil Res 1 and Class 43 standards. These materials also allow for flexibility and routing through small spaces.
- Expansive temperature ratings: Since these cables are built for performance, their temperature range is a little less than some other Xtra-Guard cables, but they’re still exceedingly versatile. They’ll work in temperatures from -30℃ to 80℃ or 105℃, depending on the configuration.
- Flexibility: Stranded conductors add flexibility to Xtra-Guard cables, making them more resistant to bends and easier to twist through tight spaces.
- Excellent resistance to electromagnetic interference: With the addition of Supra-Shield, Xtra-Guard 1 cables, along with every other cable in the Xtra-Guard line, provide excellent protection from electromagnetic interference (EMI). In many of the demanding environments in which you’ll find Xtra-Guard 1, reducing this interference is critical.
- A variety of flame ratings: The Xtra-Guard 1 cable has UL VW-1, UL 1685, CSA FT-4, and IEC 60332-1 and -2 flame ratings for essential protection.
- Easy jacket stripping: The nylon ripcord design makes jacket stripping much simpler and faster.
While versatile on its own, Xtra-Guard 1 comes in several configurations that expand its capabilities. It is available in multiconductor or multipair options, in unshielded, foil shielded and Supra-Shield varieties, and in 300V or 600V options.
Unshielded cables can offer reduced diameters for tight spaces where noise isn’t an issue, while foil shielded cables can meet moderate EMI requirements, particularly at lower frequencies. Foil shields are lighter than Alpha Wire’s Supra-Shield material, which combines aluminum, polyester and aluminum foil with a tinned copper braid shield. The latter offers exceptional shielding for both low and high frequencies.
