UL1028, a member of the wide category of hook-up wire, offers similar characteristics to many other hook-up wires but is available in a larger size. It is commonly used in applications involving indoor appliance wiring and electronics equipment.

At WesBell Electronics, we offer quality UL1028 wire that meets various third-party specifications and can be cut to any odd size you need. Let’s look a little closer at UL1028 wire and how it’s commonly used.

What Is UL1028 Wire?

UL1028 wire is a fairly simple type of hook-up wire that features polyvinyl chloride (PVC) insulation and a stranded tinned copper conductor. The PVC insulation provides protection from chemicals, abrasion and temperatures of up to 105℃. It’s also flame-resistant. The thicker stranded tinned copper conductors give it a power rating of up to 600 volts.

Its size is what puts UL1028 wire in a category of its own. We carry UL1028 in American Wire Gauge (AWG) 8. In comparison, UL1015 is commonly available in sizes from 24-10 AWG and UL1007 in 28-16 AWG. We also offer UL1028 in a wide range of colors, including black, blue, gray, brown, red, orange, violet, green, white and yellow, and these can all be combined in spiral striping.

UL1028’s voltage ratings and moderate flexibility make it a common choice for appliance wiring, device manufacturing and electronics equipment. Like many other hook-up wires, UL1028 must meet several approvals and standards from outside organizations. Our UL1028 PVC hook-up wire carries the following specifications or approvals:

  • The CSA Group.
  • Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS).
  • UL 1015/UL1230.

UL1028 vs. Other Hook-Up Wire

UL1028 offers a large AWG for applications that require it, but if that’s not necessary, or if you need a feature such as a high temperature rating, you may want to look at the other options of hook-up wire that can save on costs or offer different specifications. These different wire options include:

  • UL1007: UL1007 wire is a general-purpose variety with a temperature rating of 80℃, offering accommodation of up to 300 volts and improved flexibility in low-temperature environments.
  • UL1015: UL1015 wire is another general-purpose wire with a slightly thicker PVC insulation than UL1007. Its temperature rating reaches 105℃ and can support up to 600 volts.
  • Type E polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) wire: If your application calls for an extremely high heat tolerance, a hook-up wire with PTFE insulation, like Type E, can typically support up to 200℃ with similar or higher voltage ratings than PVC-insulated wires. While these can be a little pricier, they are necessary in some environments.
