Rounded service entry cable (SE-R) is used for a range of panel feeder and branch circuit applications. This cable is the round version of the SE-U cable. The latter is flat, unarmored — hence the U designation — and has a few other key differences. SE-R works well in indoor and outdoor applications and can stand up to threats like direct sunlight and moisture.

Here at WesBell Electronics, we carry copper SE-R cable, as well as SE-U cable. High-quality materials and excellent customer service are hallmarks of working with WesBell. Let’s dig into SE-R cable and go over the options and applications in which you can use it.

What Is SE-R Cable?

SE-R cable starts off with copper wires surrounded by thermoplastic, high-heat, nylon (THHN) insulation and a sturdy polyvinyl chloride (PVC) jacket. It also has a ground wire. These materials give it sunlight and water resistance and flame retardance, making it good for both indoor and outdoor usage. When used outdoors, SE-R is not appropriate for direct burial and must be used in conduit.

Common uses for SE-R cable include use as an aboveground service entrance cable and for panel feeding to multi-residential buildings. It is rated for 600 volts and 90℃ in both wet and dry conditions.

SE-R is available in several different American Wire Gauge (AWG) sizes, from 6 to 4/0 to suit different applications. All options come in a gray jacket, and we sell them with bulk discounts if buying large quantities.

Our SE-R cable maintains many different approvals from outside organizations, including the U.S. Military, ASTM International and UL, LLC:

  • Military specification A-A59544
  • ASTM
  • UL 83
  • UL 854
  • Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH)
  • Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS)

SE-R vs. SE-U

There are two notable differences to be aware of when it comes to SE-R and SE-U cables. The first is in their shape. SE-R is rounded, while SE-U is flat. The second is their ground wires or lack thereof — SE-R has a ground cable, while SE-U does not. Because of this, SE-U is not commonly used for sub-feed applications like SE-R, but it is often used in service entrances. Plus, SE-U cables are not stranded, making them a little more time-consuming to use.

If you need SE-U cable, please give us a call.

If you’re looking for just the THHN wire used inside the cable, please see our electrical wire. Other products we carry include welding cable for flexible outdoor applications and hook-up wire for indoor use on appliances. Give us a call if you have any specific requirements and we’ll work with you to figure out a solution.
