SOOW Portable Power Cables
SOOW cable is a multi conductor power cable used as a power supply cable. It's just like your everyday extension cord with out the plugs on each end. A lot of customers use this wire to actually make extension cords themselves. Other customers have a long run for a job where they need to bring power out onto the job site from a long distance away. There are all different sizes of SO cable for different applications.
Each conductor in portable cord is made with flexible bare copper strands and a PVC insulation. Then all of the conductors are covered with a rubber neoprene jacket for protection against weather, oil and solvents. The rubber also protects SO cable from the rough impact it receives on the job site. Most manufacturers only make SOOW and SJOOW cable now because making the SO and SJO was getting to be too much. It was cheaper and easier to put all the approvals on each cable. The extra "O" and "W" stand for Oil resistant and Water resistant and now come on all cables that WesBell sells in the power cord area.
The only difference with SJO cable compared to the SOOW is that the "J" stands for Junior and it's 300 volts instead of 600 volts. That means it comes with a thinner jacket incase you might need that for your application. They don't offer the SJOOW cable in gauge sizes bigger than #10 or in any cable 5 conductors or bigger. Those cables so commonly come in 600 volt that it's not worth making and would be a special order with the manufacturer.
We also has extension cords available to sell which have the same build up as the portable cord but with the plugs on the end. We have limited extension cords on our website so you might need to call if you need something special. We also have power cords with a plug on one end and stripped other end to attach it manually for certain applications.
After SO cord there's the industrial power cord called Type W cable, which is basically the same as SOOW cable but much bigger and more heavy duty. It will most likely be dragged across job sites and run over by heavy machinery all day. So it's made with a much tougher rubber jacket to withstand the impact. It's also a 2000 volt power cable usually made in awg sizes #2 and up. Type G-GC cable is the same as Type W cable but made with ground wires and a ground check. The Type W has a same size ground wire with green insulation and it's included in the conductor count.
